An alternative school student refused to go into the classroom and was “acting orally aggressive towards the teacher.”
As I approached the student, he said quietly, “My mom locked me out of the house and I’ve been wearing the same thing…,” looking down nervously.
I took white t-shirts and deodorant from my cabinet, saying, “Here. I know this isn’t much, but do you think it will fit? If I allow you to change here will you go to class?”
He looked up at me, smiled and said “Yes… can I leave my old shirt with you until I leave for the day, ‘cause I don’t wanna get this one dirty.”
The smallest things can mean the most.
