In Study Circle 2, we build on information gathered and discussed previously, taking steps to more clearly identify targeted concerns in each local area. We then examine patterns or practices within the community that may provide clues about what, when, and where to start in reducing hurdles for at-risk youth and their families.
We start with a brief review of questions and concerns raised in Study Circle 1, specific data requested, and then move to discussing two topics that apply broadly across communities: THE DEVELOPMENTAL APPROACH and TRAUMA INFORMED CARE. All communities will learn from these two broad areas -- which are addressed in the videos and materials below -- and then Study Circle 2 will move quickly to applying that knowledge to potential sticking points, or concerns, in each local area.
Please start with the developmental approach, which, to some extent, also addresses the "nature vs. nurture" element that some of you asked about. The easy answer is: YES! That is, it's not an either/or question; that's a false dichotomy. We need to address both the capacity of individuals as well as the power of the situation. In our culture, we almost ALWAYS underestimate the power of the situation.
Much of the INTERACTION between the body/brain and the situation is brought to sharp attention in the videos about youth and trauma. This material will bring to light recent information, which has developed dramatically in the past few years. A big concern of juvenile justice experts is the multiple effects of trauma on development throughout the life course, which varies depending on critical life events.
